Named for its country of origin, this vivid violetish blue variety of the mineral species zoisite burst onto the gemstone scene in the late 1960's. Smaller stones tend toward lighter tone while larger stones typically display deeper color. Tanzanite is always heated to permanently change its color from brown to its signature violet/blue.
