Known as the Garnet of the Sun, Spessartine (sometimes referred to as Spessartite) is one of the rarer varieties of the garnet group species and takes its name from the Spessart district of Bavaria. Spessartines radiate warmth in energizing shades of yellow-orange, dark gold, true orange and scarlet-orange. In the trade, tangerine hued spessartine from Namibia is called Mandarin Garnet. Sources include Namibia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Brazil, Myanmar, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Garnet is designated as the birthstone for January and the 2nd wedding anniversary.
