Possessing a special optical phenomenon called asterism, this rare variety of ruby is perfect for the discerning gemstone connoisseur. Perfectly aligned rutile needle-like inclusions produce a six-rayed star which is enhanced by a direct light source. Star rubies occur in a range of reds from pinkish red to red to purplish red to orangish/brownish red in medium to very dark tones. Lighter tones are classified as pink or lavender star sapphires. Star rubies are found in the same localities as rubies: Thailand, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Cambodia, Vietnam, Madagascar and India. Ruby is the birthstone for July and is designated for the 15th and 40th anniversaries.
