Alexandrite is the scarce, color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. The June birthstone displays yellowish, brownish, or bluish green colors in daylight and orangy to purplish red colors in incandescent light. Quality is often determined by the significance of color change in each stone. (See the chart below for instructions on how to show the color change in Alexandrite.) The stone is durable, requiring no special care, has no known enhancements and is desiganted for the 55th wedding anniversary. Alexandrite is mined in Brazil, Tanzania, Russia, and India.
